In 1916 the citizens of Clearwater approved a bond of $10,000 to fund the construction of a 2-mile long wooden bridge to Clearwater Beach.  This barrier island has been intensely developed.  Dredging was done to provide additional land for houses and businesses.  The most recent improvements to the bridge were completed in 2005.

Bio:
On October 25, 1921 a hurricane separated Hog Island at the part of the island referred to as "the narrows." The separated islands were known as Hog Island and Scharrer's Island. In 1928 the island's name was officially changed to Caladesi Island. Thanks in large part to the passion and persistence of Gerald Rehm, then mayor of Dunedin, Caladesi Island became a state park in 1967.
