This conceptual view of the Open Air Interpretive Center was created by John Hobach and is based on the Caladesi Project Working Group's vision for the center.  John captured the group's objective to create a facility that will invite visitors to explore the history, beauty and recreational offerings of this natural barrier island.  The Open Air Interpretive Center will offer a panoramic view of the area and is certain to become a must see destination for those visiting Caladesi Island.

The mission of the Open Air Interpretive Center is to provide visitors to Caladesi Island with the opportunity to explore the island's rich history, diverse recreational offerings and a rare glimpse into the beauty and splendor of a natural barrier island.  From the early days of the Tocobaga Indians to today's hikers, kayakers, boaters, bird watchers and beach goers, the "beautiful bayou" offers its visitors a variety of unique experiences in a unspoiled island setting.

The exhibits in the Open Air Interpretive Center will transport visitors back to a time when the Tocobaga Indians called the island their home.  Guests will learn of the challenges and wonders of living in Pinellas County circa 1500.  Traveling through time, visitors will gain insight into the hardships and rewards of the early settlers on the island and how they shaped its future.  Interactive exhibits will trace the significant events over the past 100 years and watch the island evolve from the private paradise of a little girl named Myrtle to the realized dream of Gerald Rehm of preserving the island as a state park.  Many have come to love the "beautiful bayou" and are passionate about preserving its beauty and and history.

The Open Air Interpretive Center will showcase the diverse wildlife population and plant life that call the island home.  From the majestic Great Horned Rim Owl to the feisty and fun to watch Osprey families, Caladesi Island is home to hundreds of varieties of birds.  Wild flowers grow freely over the island and if you time your visit just right, you're likely to encounter one of the island's Gopher Tortoises out forging for a late afternoon snack.  The Open Air Interpretive Center will allow visitors to explore their Caladesi and find their place in the "beautiful bayou".

On October 25, 1921 a hurricane separated Hog Island at the part of the island referred to as "the narrows." The separated islands were known as Hog Island and Scharrer's Island. In 1928 the island's name was officially changed to Caladesi Island. Thanks in large part to the passion and persistence of Gerald Rehm, then mayor of Dunedin, Caladesi Island became a state park in 1967.
