Our medical team returned from Haiti on April 15, with inspiring stories -- and lots of photos. The doctors saw 391 patients, truly an amazing feat considering they were practicing under very primitive conditions. Karen Jensen shared her feelings after the exhausting, but inspiring journey: "I never more enjoyed a hot shower with running water or washing my hair, filing my torn nails and sleeping on a bed in my life as I did last night—we have no idea the privileges we take for granted." Amen.
In addition the team had much dialogue with the community about the new needs of the parish. The main priority is now to rebuild St. Gabriel's school. Press play on the video below to view a slideshow of the journey. (Thanks to Chuck Brodsky for permission to use his heartfelt song, "We Are Each Other's Angels", with the presentation.) .. 2 Comments .. Permalink Fr. John's Email from Beau Sejour, Haiti

We received word from Fr. John yesterday in Haiti. He and the medical mission team arrived in Beau Sejour safe and sound (thanks be to God!). Here's the text of his email:
"Dear All, Our team is here in Beau Sejour. We made it here after 2 hours by truck and over 3 hours on the mules or by walking. The destruction in Port-au-Prince is indescribable. Tent cities everywhere. But goodwill abounds. Our staging house in P-a-P was filled with engineers, architects, contractors, etc. who were there to help teach reconstruction to the folks. The house in P-a-P was uninhabitable so we slept outside in tents. Then the rains came. Luckily, we were fairly dry - but all of us are still cleaning the mud off our shoes... Although the rainy season hasn't officially hit, there have been torrential rains each evening lasting for hours like I've never seen. "Mud" is the word. The doctors and nurses saw over 50 people yesterday and will see between 60-70 today. They will do the same or more tomorrow and Tuesday. Others of us serve as "runners" attempting to sort people, take BPs, and the weight of each patient. A good portion of the church was destroyed but has been serving as our clinic and we had Mass in there today. Father Ronal's house was completely destroyed, but he and the people built a temporary shelter which is incredible. He is truly a miracle worker. If anyone thinks that there are bad things happening in the Church, they need only travel with a group like this to see how good, unselfish and dedicated these folks are to their faith and their chosen ministry. This is what the Church is when it is at its best. I'll sign off for now. You will be remembered in our prayers at Mass each morning. I am not able to send any pictures or videos since the internet connection is so slow. Also, I will not be checking your emails so I won't tie up service for others. Thank you for your kind prayers. God continues to hear them and bless us!" --Fr. John Tapp .. 0 Comments .. Permalink Final Preparations Underway for Medical Mission Trip

With the help of our volunteer medical professionals, we ordered and have received a substantial amount of medicines for the upcoming medical mission to Beau Sejour. Volunteers met this past Monday night to pack up the medicines and supplies into 12 large duffle bags for the trip.
Dr. Ilka Nazario and Karen Jensen package medicines for the mission trip. Luckily our communication with Fr. Ronal has been much less sporadic over the past month and we've been receiving regular updates from St. Gabriel. Here is Father's latest email: “I distributed 300 tickets for the medical visit. Ask if I may distribute more tickets, and also to tell the doctors that they will have a great deal of work. Many people are waiting. A thousand thanks for your prayers and all you do for me and Beau-Sejour.” -- Fr. Ronal This promises to be a journey that will be very memorable for all involved and will show the amazing things that we can accomplish with God's help. Please continue to pray for success of the mission and the safety of the team! .. 1 Comments .. Permalink All Medicines in Beau Sejour Lost in Ruins

We received an update from Fr. Ronal today. He is currently working to identify the people in Beau Sejour who are most in need of medical care. To ensure they get seen by our medical mission team in April, Father is distributing tickets to those with the most urgent health problems. The team hopes to treat up to 500 people during their time in Haiti. Fr. Ronal’s email (below) gives you some insight into the challenges their community is currently facing: “No problem with the water except that you have to bring the product to treat the water. All the cisterns at the rectory are disconnected. Deworming treatment [is] very important. I will already begin the distribution of the tickets this week and we'll arrange for the most urgent cases to be seen. The food situation is becoming difficult. Lots of people are leaving Port-au-Prince to come to Beau Sejour. Now there are many more people to feed in the families. Now I have a communication problem with the Internet. My system does not work very well. I believe that the team will make the best of the situation. But we'll do our best so that all will go well for the benefit of the people of Beau Sejour. As far as medicine is concerned, we have nothing at the health center. The reserves we had are lost in the ruins. And the medication you will bring is important. Many people are also suffering from stomach pains. I imagine that they are ulcer attacks. I send you my prayers and greetings.” -- Fr.Ronal .. 4 Comments .. The Twinning Committee met on Monday, February 22, to identify the medicines that need to be procured for the people of Beau Sejour. In April, we will be sending a small Medical Mission team to Beau Sejour to provide medical care. We are hoping to be able to treat up to 300 children and 200 adults over four days during the week following Easter. Dr. Ilka Nazario, an Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Physician, and Anne Richter, a certified nurse-midwife, attended the meeting to identify the specific medicines and supplies that should be purchased for the trip. Anne, a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, has a Master’s degree in Public Health and has extensive experience providing care to people in developing countries. She provided invaluable guidance to the team and insight into what the medical team from St. Paul’s has encountered on their trips to Haiti. In addition, Patsy Jamieson, a nurse and seasonal parishioner from Prince Edward Island, Canada, has volunteered to organize the breakdown and packaging and labeling of the medicines (they will be labeled in French). Fr. Ronal has identified pain killers, vitamins and blood pressure medicines, as crucial needs. .. 0 Comments .. Permalink Father Ronal Reports 300 Dead in Beau Sejour

We received some very sad news today from Fr. Ronal. Here is his latest email: “I apologize for not answering as quickly as before due to the communication problems now existing in Haiti. I don't have an exact number of parishioners injured by the earthquake but more than 300 dead have been counted in the parish, including the chapels and numerous destroyed and damaged houses. Up to now we have not started school. Besides we have to demolish the building and build another. There are cracks in all the compartments. Please tell Karen and Father Tapp for me that I am very eager for the mission in April. I have already installed a little house for my guests in April. It is small but I think we'll manage. Concerning the medicine, I believe that we will need lots of vitamins, high blood pressure medicine, and pain killers. Also please thank the parishioners of Holy Family for their donations to Beau Sejour. Union in prayer, .. 0 Comments .. Permalink Holy Family Launches Lenten Fundraiser for St. Gabriel

Father Paul was inspired with a wonderful idea for a fundraiser this Lent. The idea is simple: just give up a few luxuries during the week, and put the money you save into a special envelope for St. Gabriel. When Easter arrives, everyone will bring their envelopes to Church and all the funds will be donated to the people of St. Gabriel parish. This is a great way to make your Lenten observation make a big difference in the lives of those in Beau Sejour. If you would like to participate in this special observance, pick up a pack of envelopes from one of the entrances to the Church. They have a large purple cross printed on them, with the words “Carrying the cross with our brothers and sisters in Haiti.” .. 1 Comments .. Permalink Newer Entries | Page 1 of 2 | Older Entries |

Hand in Hand with Haiti is a twinning mission of Holy Family Catholic Church. In 2008, Holy Family parish reached out to St. Gabriel parish, a community of 22,000 people in the mountains of Haiti, to develop a relationship of sharing, solidarity, prayer and understanding. In the short time since our parish twinning partnership began, a strong bond has been created with the faith-filled people from this small agricultural community. Their community may not have running water or electricity,
but their faith overflows!
