For the past seven years I've suffered from a chronic sleep disorder. But this week, through the magic of reflexology, I think I might have finally found a cure!

My sleep problems all started after I took a prescription corticosteroid medication for something completely unrelated. Up till that time, I never had any problem getting my zzz's. But since 2002, I've been awakening throughout the early morning hours, feeling like I was having an attack of some sort. I'll spare you all my symptoms, but suffice to say that in that time I've visited at least a dozen different doctors, made a few trips to the ER, and visited almost every health food store in the area. (Rollin' Oats is a good one if you live in St. Pete.)

When my health problems first started, I had almost no experience with medical therapies and zero knowledge of nutrition or holistic therapies. So, like most people, I started my journey back to health at my primary care physicians office. When that doctor couldn't help me, I found another one, then another, then I started working my way through several specialties - neurology, endocrinology and of course, several sleep doctors.

All along I'd get offered prescriptions of different types - antidepressants, anti-anxiety meds, cortisol shots, etc. All of which were received with a deep sense of skepticism on my part, because after all, it was a prescription medicine that had led to this severe problem in the first place.

Anyway, long story short, a few years ago I started going to an acupuncture clinic in downtown St. Petersburg called Acupuncture & Herbal Therapies. And while the treatments didn't get to the root of my problem, each session would certainly help. So as I was researching my situation once more last week and I wandered across a blog article about reflexology (a close relative of acupuncture), that deals primarily with massaging the feet and hands to elicit a healing response. I thought, "Why not? Couldn't hurt."

Well, I've got to run, but In my next posting, I'll share more about the reflexology point that has hopefully, finally, put my sleep problem to bed!

Bio:
I've been exploring holistic approaches to health and wellness since 2002 when I underwent a seven-year health crisis that the traditional medical establishment wasn't able to treat. (Or was only willing to treat with pharmaceuticals that have very dangerous side effects.) In that time, I've tried about every health supplement on the market and discovered some amazingly effective alternative health treatments and resources located right here in the Tampa Bay area. When not strolling through the aisles of my local healthfood store trying out tasty new treats, I work as a technical communications specialist/grant writer for a Bay area company.
