A 60-foot fire tower is installed as an attraction on Caladesi Island and affords a wonderful place for lofty observations.  In 1982 it has to be removed due to safety issues, as the salt air has caused corrosion of the metal struts and bolts.

The name "Hog Island" is officially changed to "Caladesi Island".  The name "Caladesi" had been kept alive in oral tradition and was the place name preferred by Mr. Scharrer who makes no objection to the name Hog Island but thinks that Caladesi is a name more appropriate to the beauty of the island.

On October 25, 1921 a hurricane separated Hog Island at the part of the island referred to as "the narrows." The separated islands were known as Hog Island and Scharrer's Island. In 1928 the island's name was officially changed to Caladesi Island. Thanks in large part to the passion and persistence of Gerald Rehm, then mayor of Dunedin, Caladesi Island became a state park in 1967.
